The South Austin Neighborhood Center has reached out to the Dawson Neighborhood Association to help prepare, submit, and produce a community mosaic art project for installation at the Neighborhood Center.
The DNA is working with local artist Ryah Christensen, who produced a similar mosaic for the Rosewood-Zaragosa neighborhood center, to prepare a proposal for submission to the City of Austin Neighborhood Partner Program. The NPP funds up to 70% of approved art projects and allows the remaining costs to be covered through community-provided volunteer hours, both time spent on the art project itself and time spent in other volunteer activities that directly serve the community, such as park cleanup, through in-kind donations of materials and services, or through cash donations. For more details see Art Project: Community Mosaic at South Austin Neighborhood Center
The NPP takes proposal submissions twice a year: June and October. We are targeting an October submission in order to give us time to gather mosaic tile designs from the community so that we can create a reasonably finished design for the project. The plan for the project itself is to hold one or more tile-making workshops with the project artist once the project is approved.
Please see Community Mosaic: Contribute Your Own Tile Design for instructions on how to contribute tile designs.
The Dawson Neighborhood Association Community Mosaic Committee, through member Don Dory, posts regular project status to Next Door, so look for Don’s updates. I will also provide updates here on the Dawson Neighborhood Association web site.
