Last night was the unveiling of a mural honoring Raul Salinas at a house on Euclid. Raul was raised in Austin and is regarded as one of the most important Chicano poets and human rights activists.. From 1981 until his death in 2004 he ran the Texas and Multicultural and Poiltical Resistencia Bookstore and community gathering space (used to be at 1810 South First). He also taught at St Edwards Univ and received many awards including the Louis Reyes Rivera Lifetime Achievement, and the Martin Luther King Jr, Cesar Chavez-Rosa Parks Visiting Professorship Award at Univ of Michigan.
Some of his family members live in the Dawson Neighborhood as well as people influenced by him through poetry and personal contact.
The event last night was also a benefit for La Resistencia Bookstore now at 4926 E. Cesar Chavez.
